Drexel Squash History

Drexel University - Athletic and Squash History

Drexel University was founded in 1891 by noted philathropist Anthony Joseph Drexel in Philadelphia, USA. Today, Drexel University is Philadelphia's leading technological university and one of the top National Universities in the United States.

Drexel University has always supported its college athletes to the highest standards. All Drexel Althletes, also known as the 'Drexel Dragons', compete in the NCAA Division I. Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis, Golf and Crew are the most popular sports in the university community. However, Squash is one of the most emerging sports at Drexel University.

Founded in 2005 by Justin Burkholder and Evan Cyrkin, the Drexel Squash Club has fathered a strong team competing in the intercollegiate circuit as well as the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association league which is the largest urban squash league in the United States. Club practices are open to all, as are the Drexel Squash Nights which are quarterly held round robin style tournaments where students get the opportunity to eat, socialize, and compete with the team members.

In 2008, the Drexel Squash team finished #35 in the nation at the Men's Squash National Intercollegiate Championships held at Harvard University. After just two years of competition in the intercollegiate circuit, Drexel Squash has a very promising future. In fact, Drexel University has approved the construction of two international squash courts in the new fitness center which will be complete in Fall 2009. The facility will have stadium seating and will be the arena for our home matches.

In 2009, the Drexel Squash team emerged as Chaffee Division National Champions, at the CSA Nationals at Princeton by defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores. At the 2009 CSA Nationals, the Drexel Men's Squash team also faced top teams like Columbia and MIT.

The Drexel Squash Team has also participated in various regional competitive tournaments such as the SESRA in Atlanta, Georgia. In January 2010, the Drexel Squash team travelled to Palo Alto, California to compete in the Stanford Round Robin Tournament. This was the first time that the men's squash team travelled to the West Coast for a colliegiate squash tournament. The team looks to continue working to move up the rankings and be a strong university squash team to condent with. The Drexel Squash Team is affiliated to the College Squash Association (CSA).
